Frank, as to remembering you,...a little foggy there, BUT as far as I'm concerned all that served @ TFOD are my brothers, so your just a long lost brother.
William, I was in headquarters comany, first with the post drycleaners and laundry. When they shut that down I became part of the Security Guard, spent most of the time at the main gate.
Very cool duty. Lots of time of, meant lots of time going to Paris.
I'm in the Real Estate Business with my son. Still enjoying golf and racquetball..

Date: 07/09/2011 Name: Landon H. Thomason, Jr. E-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org Location: Montgomery, TX Referred by: Google Comments: My experience at TFOD was as an “Army brat” from September, 1955 to June, 1959. My dad was the supply sergeant for the MP Company. He was then transferred to Vassincourt to assume the same duties for the 520th Transportation Co (I think), then finally was in charge of a warehouse selling and otherwise disposing of furniture declared surplus when several bases in Germany, Holland, Belgium and France were closed.
We traveled by ship (an MSTS ship, not a cruise liner) from Ft. Hamilton, NY to Bremerhaven, Germany, then by rail to Metz, France.
I attended the on base school for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade. I remember the teachers having to teach 2 or 3 grade levels in one class room some years. The base snack-bar doubled as the school cafeteria for lunch. One year (my 5th grade year, I think) our civilian teacher, for reasons unknown, had to return to the U.S. early in the school year. The rest of the year was taught by a young soldier. We addressed him as “Mr.”, which seemed pretty strange to us, at the time. I think his name was Stitt.
There was no military housing at the time. I think it finally opened sometime in 1959. We lived briefly in a Vroil. Our landlord was George Kolopmeitzeff (I am not sure of the spelling). He was also a mechanic in one of the motor pools at TFOD and went by the name Jo-Jo. We then moved to Couvonges (6 Rue du 29 Aout) for the remainder of our tour. At the time there were five other American families living in the village. The high points of the tour were visits to Normandy (Omaha Beach), where my dad fought during WWII and the WWI battlefields where my maternal grandfather fought.
We were transferred to Ft. Dix, NJ and subsequently to Ft. Greely, Alaska where I joined the Navy. I served 30 years, retiring as a Master Chief (E-9).

I remember the Bicylists quite well during my stay at Trois Fontaines in 1951-1952. There were few automobiles and so many Bicyles on the roadways. It seemed that everyone was more courteous then.

At age 81, I may be the oldest correspondent who visits this website on a regular basis. See my entries dated 5/25/2011, 12/31/2010 and 10/31/2010.
As previously mentioned, I was a member of the 421st Ordnance Ammunition Company that resided in Tents and helped to develop that muddy hillside later known as Trois Fontaines Ammunition Depot into an effective US Army base.
I search the Guest Book entries daily for some mention of old friends and acquaintances - No luck so far. In addition, I have failed to find any reference to my unit or those early days that I remember so well. That unit must have been deactivated at some point in time after April 1952 when I transferred to Berlin Military Post in Germany.
The book entitled: “Across the Face of France: Liberation and Recovery, 1944-63”, by James A. Huston, contains a paragraph on page 129 pertaining to early days at the Trois Fontaines Ammunition Depot. See the following link:

It took the two of us to make the TFOD or TFAD web page.I had some old maps & orders,& Alain had years of PC experience from his job. It was easy & fun for him (like a hobby)
I went to France four times to see Alain & work on the page. He a French-man & me a most unknown G.I.from the past.I told our story early in this guest book(look way back in the 1st pages).
About one year ago I got a call from Jerry Daddato,& He was so happy to find
the web page. What makes him great in my eyes was we worked together & lived in the same hut.He was the kind of person I could never forget. Wife & I went to see him & his wife in March. It was a real nice trip in our astro van(camping & sleeping in it half of the time.I called him before & asked if it would be cool to come & vist, Ok
said I but it would take a week because I wanted to see other things. The biggy was Graceland on the way & the Alamo on the way back home.
Alains daughter is web master now & I hope some people will give her encouragement to keep this alive for the years to come.
I must say when Alain died It cut me deep Because we talked almost daily over our PC,this went on for years.
I want to thank all of you & keep the faith

I and my parents, of course, were taken there to the hospital after my delivery. Thats a story I never tired of hearing. I was in my Dads arms in an open jeep all the way and the nurses made him put on a gown and mask before he could see me again after we got there. so PO'ed him every time he told it. And also, He basic "crashed" the gate to the base getting my Mom there from town because he drove it so hard the engine was smoking and he was afraid it would die before he could get her to the dispensary. There might be some exageration there but thats the way it was told to me many times and its how I like to think of it.

Maybe some early members of the 421st Ordnance Ammunition Company will remember the first stages of operations at Trois Fontaines Ammunition Depot.
In April 1951, I left a General Depot at Kaiserslautern, Germany, and traveled by train to St. Dizier, France, where I joined members of the 421st billeted there in Warehouses. Each day for several days, we boarded 2 ½ Ton Trucks and went to work setting up a campsite on the muddy hillside which was later named Trois Fontaines Ammunition Depot (TFAD). We erected tents and buildings, dug latrines and established a road network. Finally, we moved the unit to our new home and started to perform the mission of establishing ammunition storage sites located within the Foret de Trois Fontaines.
In addition to the 421st, there were two Truck Companies on station there – We used 2 ½ ton trucks assigned to those units to move Ammunition from the Rail Head located de la Gare du Robert Espagne to the storage sites. They were also used to transport our personnel as need be. For example, there were no bath facilities available at the campsite and the men were transported to nearby Sermaize les Bains to utilize community bathing facilities there.
I recall that the 421st consisted of 248 men and several officers - I seem to remember that the CO was named CPT Peters. I was one of four Regular Army enlisted personnel assigned to the unit – all other personnel belonged to the US Army Reserve and had been called to active duty because of the Cold War and the Korean Conflict. I was a SSGT (E-5) when I joined the unit. I quickly moved up the ladder from a position as Assistant Squad Leader, to Squad Leader, to Platoon Sergeant, to Field First Sergeant and finally to First Sergeant. On 15 Oct 1951, I was promoted to SFC (E-6). I left the unit in April 1952, when reassigned to a position in the Chemical Section of Headquarters, Berlin Command, at Berlin, Germany.

I believe there also was a 421 Ammo Ord Co at the base as well as a detachment of Polish Army Guards. Due to a fortuitous series of events, I was sent to Verdun Signal Corp school for Radio Operator training and was later transferred to the Signal Corp in Verdun. I served in that capacity until Jan 1954 and then sent home at completion of my tour of duty. My experiences at Trois-Fontaines Ammo Depot were many and mixed, interesting and arduous. I can only wonder about those guys I served with back then and what may have become of them. Thank God,my life was blessed and things got better after I left there. I can still remember the looks of disbelief, shock and finally anger on the faces of the First Sgt and the Company Commander to learn that I was getting a transfer out of their unit, It was almost unheard of at the time. But what is past is past. I'm 80 yrs old now and I have miles yet to go.
If there are any comrades of mine from those days still around, let me know.

He was the man responsible for this website -- which was devoted to rekindling our fond memories and experiences in France. Our service time there at TFAD was an important part of our life. Many of us went from boyhood to manhood while we were stationed there. Alain's passion for showing respect and gratitude for the American military service in France should be never forgotten. He was a French patriot and he was also a champion of the American servicemen who were called to do their military duty in his country. He told me many times that he had always admired and respected the American GI in his country.
Our hearts go out to Alain's wife and his entire family with our deepest sympathies. I believe that I speak for many here when I say that Alain truly was a good man -- a great citizen of the world.
May he rest in God's eternal peace.

I worked in Security but was also familiar with the Dependent School. I particularly noted a posting by a former dependent child, Shelley Machnowski Townsend. I knew of her father, Jerry, and I actually remember her sister, Lisa, who was in 3rd/4th grade. Does anyone remember Sgt. Perkins. I ran into him in Boston in the late '60's. Despite the fact that we were in the same barracks, he didn't remember me. Maybe it was beacuse of the rank difference and the fact that I was always quiet and he was always loud and drunk. He was great guy. I guess the drinking got the better of him. He told me in Boston that in the time after I left when he took over the Dry Cleaners, he was arrested for embezzlement and thrown in the brig and then discharged. We had a great time in Boston talking about TFOD. We never called it TFAD. It was always TFOD. Perkins and I lost contact. Well I hope he is OK and wouldn't it be great to see him again. The bus driver and bus guards often came early and sat down for coffee with my mother, Anne Machnowski.
Another enduring memory: My parents would invite enlisted men from TRAD (and probably Vassincourt) to Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas dinner. As I remember, it was always 3 or 4 GIs. Some of you may remember that Thanksgiving dinner usually included our friends the Bayens - particularly the 3 sisters, Annmarie, Colette and Francoise. They were in their late teens, early twenties.
I always thought that the GIs enjoyed the food but more so the girls.

When DeGaule gave us our walking papers, I was in TFAD. There we humped
750 thousand gallons of gas left over from WWII and were rewarded with the task of humping approximately 55 square miles of ammo depot. Did lots of TDY in my journeys Vassincourt, Vitry Le Francois, Verdun, Nancy and Orleans with the 553EBC and the 97th EBC. I too have lots of memories and often wondered what had happened to the bases we left behind. At TF I was in barracks #1452 next to the mess hall.My only sad memory was hearing that one of the companies I was attached to on TDY Co.A, B. or D of the 97th was sent to Viet Nam and was completely wiped out or at least most of them.

Marvin Miller Date: 12/31/2008 Name: John Todd E-mail: JohnDTodd@gmail.com Location: Deerfield, IL Referred by: Internet Search Comments: Just by good fortune, I found this website back in February of this year. I was googleing "Vassincourt" late at night and to my delight, I found many new hits including info on the 97th Engineers and it ultimately led me to this great site. I have so enjoyed viewing the many pages of great memories and wonderful pictures.
I was stationed at TFAD in 1961 and 1962 - at Vassincourt for 3 months when I first arrived and then TFAD for the remainder of my time with Uncle Sam.
I was an MP with Security Company where we also did a lot of TDY to Turkey & Germany... and Barcelona for R&R! Back in those days, our first sergeants called us "The Gruesome Five"! -- myself, Pete Sorensen, Bill O'Keefe, Henry Taylor & Guyland Hodges. Man, we did have fun over there. Viva la France!
I often think about the fact that I look back on those years in France as treasured memories -- after more than 46 years have passed. Those were good days spent with some friends that I still see to this day. I also met some great army buddies at TFAD coming from all over the US. The French people that I met on the post and off were very friendly and kind to me.
So, Robin, I thank you for having the idea to develop a website such as this. Alain, I thank you for donating so much of your time to this labor of love project. You've done a magnificent job with this tribute website and for helping to maintain great memories of special times that we all spent in a quaint area of France.
Happy New Year to All.

For years I have been searching for military and civilian personnel who were at the post during that time period. I was the only military person working in the Comptroller's Division under U.S. civilian Lewis Kandel, Comptroller. Evelyn Guthwasser was my boss, and Yvette Dupuis was my co-worker. Those were some of the best days of my life. Roger Diepe, a French civilian was a good friend, and often while he played organ in the church, I would accompany him on flute. Another good French civilian friend of mine was Evan Masselott. I participated in his wedding (1959?), and the celebration lasted the entire weekend. I was the only one speaking English for 3 days...what a blast! I left for the World in June '60, and was discharged out of Ft. Dix. The only person from TFOD that I have been able to keep in touch with is Calvin Vinson, originally from Detroit, Mi, but now residing in Memphis, Tn. Please contact me, if you have any information about anyone at TFOD during the years 1958 - 1960. I hope to return there one day. I welcome email from anyone who is familiar with Trois Fontaines, France.

My family and I lived off post at GRH housing (Yorktown?)outside Bar le Duc. Lived in the first row of housing boardering the highway. Lived next door to CPT Burke, the Commissary Officer. On the other side I believe lived Chaplain Edwards. Also remember Post Commanders, COL Hilsman, COL Taylor. Also, LTC Latta, Sgt Maj Smalley, CPT Curnutt, LT Pauley. I worked off duty at the post theater as ticket seller, along with MSG Jeffers, who was the Personnel Sgt, and manager of the theater; Sgt Garland who also was in personnel and was the projectionist. My very vivid recollection of working at the theater was the night we were showing Ben Hur and I over-sold tickets and the theater was FULL, when along comes the Post Commander and no seats were available. OUCH! Needless to say we scurried and scratched around to find seats and a place for him. For writer John Montgromery, I say I remember your dad, mother, your sister Willythel(?) and probably you too. Your grandmother lived with you then also I believe. Also, when we left in August 1962, your family was on the same ship, the USNS Patch. I remember that one night your mother won a nice Bingo jackpot. Have fond memories of the NCO Club at Combles. Worked there also off duty as bartender. Duty at TFAD was good. Being stationed there gave great opportunities to travel. Over the past 40 some odd years, I have remained close friends with H H Jeffers and Bob Garland. We have often visted and traveled together. I retired from the Army in 1975 as a Sergeant Major. Then worked for the US Bankruptcy Court, Western District of Texas for 20 years, retiring from that job in 1994. I enjoyed viewing this web site. Looks great. Jerry Machnowski, he worked out in the woods w/ammo. When we arrived at TFAD there were no real buildings standing. The soldiers were living in tents. God all that red mud!! There were 5 of us kids Lisa, Shelley, Greg, Jill, Gary. I remember how my dad use to forget us sometimes when we had scouts and we would wait at the snack bar. One Medic, Jimmicello was his last name, gave us our shots at the disp. I remember well the bus guards we had because of the French Algerian broughaha. They use to come to our house for the holidays. Went to Vassincourt also. We lived in Heiltz le Maurupt between TFAD and Vitry. In 1960 dad was transfered down south to Captieux. I've been back regularly over the years. Back in 1986 I visited TFAD and It was in ruins. I have pictures of it. We managed to get through the gate area and drive around. The school, snackbar area was gone. The bowling alley, Library, theater and HQ were still standing. Something strange was going on at the theater/library. Some one was bricking up the windows & doors. There was a twelve foot fence up around it. Saw a guy run and hide. He had on a black&white head scarf that the arabs wear. The strange thing is that there was no sign of traffic or where they had been going in and out. There were logs across the road at the gate. Checked out the housing in Bar Le Duc. It's still there and is now call the American city. Vassincourt is a big apartment complex. The old Officers club at the Chateau is still there. The whole place has been redone and there is a family living in the chateau. It was just beautiful. I was in France two summers ago for a month w/ my brothers and sister and we took a trip to check it all out. Sure made me homesick. We left France when all the Americans were so kindly ask to vacate by DeGaulle in 1966. Went to England until 1969. and finally came back to the states. From 1954 to 1969 we were never in the states. As of October 20th, 2004, Dad reported the head Jumpmaster inthe sky. His last formation after completeing his mission here on earth. He recieved his last wings that he will ever earn. T.O. and E. T believe they come in pairs.
I believing, he is setting up his dispensary to check you guys in. You better not have any profiles, because anyone who knew Dad, he would lock your heels.
I take light of things because he is in abetter place. He has gained the ultimate award and that is being with his God and Father. So be happy for him. We are.
Even in low points, when his fellow "Warriors" would come in, you could see his eyes light up and a smile. He lived, bled breathed Special Forces to the day he passed.
Thank you for being part of his legacy. He would want you to Charlie Mike. His job is done.

I think Etain was first. We lived in Yorktown Village. #27C.
I have a good memory about things because everyone was like family. In school the classes were so small that the teachers taught two grades. Went to school on base until they moved us out to Vassincourt. We didn't have a high school.I'm not sure but I think it was in Verdun. It could have been Germany. I know they had a football team. The bus would pick up the students on Saturdays and bring them back Thursday.
If you got a news paper during that time, 1957-1962, I was your paperboy. I would go down to the train station in Bar le Duc get the papers and fold them and deliver. On Sundays those who ordered the New York times, my father would take in his red MG if you can remember, and deliver in surrounding towns.
I remember the NCO club built of logs. It closeed March 24, 1962. I think there may have been one at Vassincourt.Haircuts for 15 cent. Movies 25.Those days are gone.Add more later.
